About Nursing Home Match
Nursing Home Match is an independent directory that helps families find and compare nursing homes using official quality ratings. We cover nursing homes across the United States (using the CMS Five-Star Quality Rating System) and Australia (where these facilities are called “residential aged care homes”, using Star Ratings from the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing).
United States data
US ratings come from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Care Compare “Provider Information” dataset, which covers every Medicare- or Medicaid-certified nursing home. It is published as public-domain government data and refreshed monthly. The overall 1-to-5 star rating combines three sub-ratings: Health Inspections, Staffing, and Quality Measures.
Australia data
Australian ratings come from the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, published via GEN Aged Care Data (AIHW) as the Star Ratings Quarterly Data Extract, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0). We have modified the data for presentation — including filtering, sorting, aggregation, ranking, and visual display — but rating values themselves are unchanged from the source extract.
Independence
Nursing Home Match is an independent directory. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operating in partnership with the US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Australian Government, the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, AIHW, or any nursing-home provider. We do not use government logos. References to government data are made solely to attribute the source of the underlying datasets.
How the ratings work
Both systems produce an overall 1-to-5 star rating built from sub-categories:
- Health inspections / Compliance — regulatory inspection history and deficiencies.
- Staffing — nurse and care-staff hours per resident per day.
- Quality measures — clinical indicators (pressure injuries, falls, hospitalisations).
- Resident experience — survey-based, AU only.
Methodology
We import the official public datasets listed above and republish the rating values unchanged. Every rating shown on this site is copied from the source extract; we do not score, weight, or re-rank homes ourselves. Averages, distributions, and state or regional benchmarks are calculated arithmetically from the same extract, and the sample size behind each comparison figure is shown alongside it. Where a field is missing in the source record (for example an operator’s legal business name), we say so rather than guessing. Data extract currently in use: February 2026 (AU).
Editorial policy
Guides and blog articles are written and reviewed by our editorial team and cite primary sources (CMS, Medicare.gov, the Australian Department of Health, My Aged Care, and peer-reviewed or government research) wherever a factual claim is made. We do not accept payment for coverage, rankings, or placement, and providers cannot pay to change a rating or position. When we correct an article we update it in place and change its published or updated date.
Nursing Home Match publishes general information only. Nothing on this site is medical, legal, or financial advice, and it is not a substitute for advice from a qualified professional or from the official government services listed above.
How we’re funded
The directory is free to use, requires no sign-up, and is funded by the operators of this site. We do not sell ratings, sponsored placements, or preferential ordering in search results. If we introduce advertising or referral arrangements in future, we will disclose them here and label them clearly on the page where they appear.
